Supporting Local, One Bite at a Time: Spotlight on 17 N Main Bistro

November 20, 2024

At The Bank of Tioga, we believe that a community is only as strong as its local businesses. That’s why our Eat, Shop, Bank Local blog series celebrates the businesses of northwest North Dakota. In this feature, we’re highlighting 17 N Main Bistro in Crosby, ND, owned by Travis and Morgan Ames.

What’s the story behind the owners of 17 N Main Bistro?

Travis and Morgan Ames, a husband-and-wife duo, both grew up in families with small business backgrounds, where they learned the dedication it takes to succeed. Now, as members of the Crosby community, they’re carrying on that entrepreneurial spirit by running 17 N Main Bistro.

How did they get involved with the business?

Morgan shares that the dream of owning a coffee shop or deli began over five years ago. Initially, they considered purchasing a different building on Main Street, but those plans didn’t materialize. Then, last winter, Morgan learned that the current owners of a local coffee shop were looking to sell. She and Travis started conversations with the owners and soon realized they were the right fit to take over.

With a shared vision for expanding the menu and offerings, they made the purchase, officially taking over in May 2024. Morgan, a teacher in the local school, found that the timing aligned perfectly as the school year wrapped up. Plus, two existing employees remained and the Bistro brought on additional team members to meet demand.

What can you tell us about 17 N Main Bistro?

17 N Main Bistro serves a full coffee menu alongside an assortment of fresh foods, including sandwiches, salads, breakfast burritos, yogurt parfaits, veggie cups and baked goods. There are plans to introduce a daily soup option with hopes to offer paninis a few days a week during lunch. The Bistro also provides catering services! Morgan encourages anyone planning an event to reach out with details for customized orders.

What advice would you give to others interested in starting a business?

Risk is almost inevitable in business, but as long as you’re willing to put in the effort, it will be worth it. Morgan shares her father taught her that each risk brings potential reward. She also advises aspiring business owners to be prepared to wear many hats and adapt to various roles.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

Morgan envisions expanding the Bistro’s space, possibly adding a sunroom, outdoor seating or extra indoor seating. She’s also interested in occasionally opening for evening hours and may consider applying for a beer and liquor license. The ultimate goal is to create a unique experience for the Crosby community.

Can you share an example of when our team went above and beyond for you?

Morgan recalls reaching out to Andrea Nygaard after hours with a question. Andrea immediately responded, exemplifying the helpful spirit of a small community, where people are always willing to lend a hand.

How has The Bank of Tioga’s community involvement impacted your business?

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
